Background of Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

What is SUSS?

SUSS, formerly known as SIM University, UniSIM, is Singapore's sixth autonomous university. Its mission is to provide lifelong education that equips learners to serve society.

Is SUSS still affiliated with Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd (SIM)?

SUSS no longer has affiliations with Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd. It exists separately from SIM and SIM Global Education (SIM GE), which is a brand name under SIM.

Will the degree conferred by SUSS be recognised?

Yes, SUSS is one of the local autonomous universities. Its programmes are funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education.

Will the course fees be subsidised?

Yes, students in the full-time programmes enjoy the same benefits as students in the other autonomous universities like NUS, NTU and SMU, and are eligible to apply for financial aid such as the MOE Tuition Grant.

Programme Offerings

What full-time programmes will SUSS offer?

Currently, SUSS offers eight (8) full-time direct-honours programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics with Minor (Launching in July 2017)

Do I have to take all the Minors in a programme?

No, you only take one Minor in your chosen programme of study.

What degree will I graduate with if I enrol in the Major/Minor programme?

You will graduate with a Bachelor degree in "your Major" with "your Minor". For example, if you choose Finance as your Major and Information Technology as your Minor, you will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Finance with Information Technology.

What does a Professional Major in Accountancy mean?

A Professional Major in Accountancy in SUSS's context means that it is a single Major without a Minor.

What degree will I graduate with if I enrol in the Professional Major in Accountancy programme?

You will graduate with a Bachelor of Accountancy degree.

How can I become a Chartered Accountant upon graduating with a SUSS Bachelor of Accountancy degree?

Upon completing the requirements of SUSS's Accountancy programme, you will be awarded the Bachelor of Accountancy degree, which will qualify you for direct entry into the Professional Programme under the Singapore Qualification Programme (SQP) Framework for Chartered Accountants. When you pass the Professional Programme, as well as fulfil a minimum of three (3) years of Practical Experience in an Approved Training Organisation (ATO), supervised by an approved mentor, you can qualify as a Chartered Accountant. How is SUSS's Bachelor of Accountancy programme different from what is offered by NUS, NTU and SMU?

Programmes in different universities differ with respect to their specific programme components and pedagogy, reflecting their distinctiveness. SUSS's distinctiveness is its focus on professional competency, self-directed learning and social consciousness; as well as its flexibility in facilitating full-time studies and full-time work. Other than these, the Accountancy programme in SUSS is similar to those in NUS, NTU and SMU in that all four Accountancy degree programmes are recognised by the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) and accredited by the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and the Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC).

What are the additional criteria for Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics with Minor programme?

Applicants are required to meet one of the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • At least a B4 grade in GCE 'O' level Mathematics, or
  • A pass in GCE 'O' level Additional Mathematics, or
  • A pass in GCE 'H1' Mathematics or Statistics, or
  • A pass in GCE 'A' level Mathematics

Mathematics courses taken at the diploma level will be considered if applicants do not meet the above minimum eligibility criteria.

What are the additional criteria for Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education with Minor programme?

All shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a self-declaration medical form. Applicants who are offered a place in SUSS's Early Childhood Education programme will need to pass a medical examination before confirmation of acceptance to the programme.

Given the nature of the coursework, students should be mindful that the following medical conditions could affect a teacher's work with young children:

  • Epilepsy
  • Legal blindness
  • Profound deafness
  • Diabetes
  • Mental illness
  • Restricted mobility
  • Measles
  • Rubella (German Measles)
  • Varicella (Chicken pox)

This is a requirement by ECDA for teachers, caregivers and staff working in childcare centre or kindergarten environment to be medically screened before interacting with young children.

Will there be any difference in the degree scrolls for part-time and full-time students? If so, what is the difference and how will this be reflected in the degree scroll?

No, all graduates, regardless of their mode of study (part-time or full-time), will receive a degree conferred by SUSS.

The only difference is the degree title, depending on your chosen programme of study; for example, the Major-Minor programme options (such as Bachelor of Science in Finance with Information Technology). The academic transcript, which contains all courses taken by the students, may also differ according to the courses taken by each student.

What is the duration of the full-time degree programmes?

Students are expected to take four (4) years to complete the direct honours programme; the maximum candidature is six (6) years. For Early Childhood Education full-time programme, students may take on the 3-year track if they meet the minimum grade of at least B4 for GCE 'O' Level English and CGPA of 3.50 for their Early Childhood Education diploma from either Temasek Polytechnic or Ngee Ann Polytechnic. This includes completion of a 24-week Work Attachment, a Service-Learning Project, an Overseas Experience, Outward Bound Singapore Team Building Programme and an e-Portfolio. Students who accelerate their studies by taking more courses may be able to complete their programme in 3.5 years.

Programme Structure

How many credit units do I need to complete in order to graduate?

To graduate, you will need to complete a total of 200 credit units, comprising:

  • Common Curriculum – 40 credit units
  • Professional Major or Major-Minor – 140 credit units
  • Integrative Course – 10 credit units
  • Applied Project – 10 credit units

All programmes offered in the full-time mode are direct honours programmes.

What is a direct honours programme?

For a direct honours programme, the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at the completion of the 200 credit units will determine the classification of honours awarded (e.g., Second Upper Honours).

What is Cumulative Grade Point Average?

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the cumulative average of your grades for all courses you have taken at SUSS. We use a 5-point scale to determine the CGPA.

What is the CGPA required to obtain the Honours classification?

The CGPA range for Honours is as follows:

CGPA Class of Honours
4.5 - 5.0 First Class Honours
4.0 - 4.49 Second Upper Honours
3.5 - 3.99 Second Lower Honours
3.00 - 3.49 Third Class Honours
2.00 - 2.99 Pass

For example, if you obtain a CGPA of between 2.00 to 2.99, you will graduate with a "Pass" degree. A CGPA of 4.3 will qualify you for a degree with Second Upper Honours. For First Class Honours, in addition to the CGPA requirement, you will need at least an A- grade for your Applied Project.

Do you use the US or UK system for classification of Honours?

SUSS uses the UK Honours classification (i.e., First Class Honours, Second Upper Honours, etc.) as opposed to the US honours classification (i.e., Summa cum Laude, Magna cum Laude, etc.)

What is the credit unit weightage of each course?

Each course is equivalent to either 5 or 10 credit units.

Are there any other requirements for graduation besides coursework?

Aside from coursework, all students are required to successfully complete the following components: Outward Bound Singapore Team Building Programme, an Overseas Experience, a Service-Learning Project, a Work Attachment and an e-Portfolio.

What is the Applied Project?

The Applied Project forms part of the technical competency and industry relevance training in the programme. Students will be required to identify a work-related problem, formulate an applied project, execute the research plan and propose solutions to the problem. It will be supervised by a mentor in the company and a SUSS faculty member. The project can also involve a service-learning component or be completed overseas.

What is the Integrative Course?

The Integrative Course, which will be taken near the end of the programme, draws on earlier courses taken by fitting them into an integrated, larger picture. For example for Finance students, 'Strategy' will be the integrative course. This course will require students to integrate their knowledge from different business functions to tackle strategic issues in organisations.

Why is the Common Curriculum necessary?

The Common Curriculum courses are specifically crafted to give students a broad-based view of the world and of education, allowing them to have a strong foundation and skills in the pursuit of knowledge, and to form their own ethical stand on issues. Contrary to traditional methods of teaching, the full-time programmes will bring out students' latent abilities to think and analyse situations or events on their own, thus allowing them to learn independently. With practice, this will become a lifelong habit.

What does the Common Curriculum consist of?

The Common Curriculum consists of the following courses:

  • CCO101 Thinking & Reasoning
  • CCO103 Critical Readings
  • CCO105 Social Research
  • CCO107 World Histories & Issues
  • CCO201 Culture & Diversity
  • CCO203 Sustainability, Technology & Society

In addition to the six (6) courses above, students will need to take two (2) general elective courses (equivalent to 10 credit units) to fulfil the requirements of the Common Curriculum. These two courses must be taken with part-time students who are working adults.

Why must I take classes in the evening with part-time students?

The interaction between full-time and part-time students provides tremendous value to both parties. Most, if not all, part-time students are currently in full-time employment and need to juggle study, work and family commitments. Full-time students, who are mostly fresh school leavers with little or no work experience, will be able to gain a better understanding of the work environment and industry practices, and learn about useful life skills from the part-time students.

How will classes be conducted in the full-time programmes? Are they compulsory?

Classes will be held in a seminar style, with each class no larger than 50 students. There will be substantial class activities, some of which are graded. Students are expected to attend classes.

Can I switch from a full-time mode to a part-time mode of study (say, if I have secured a full-time job during my course of study at SUSS)?

Yes, you can switch from attending day to evening classes. As long as you meet the requirements of the full-time programme, you will graduate with the full-time degree.

Can I move from a full-time programme to a part-time programme?

Yes, you can by applying for the part-time programme. You will need to meet the admission requirements of the part-time programme. Once you have moved from a full-time programme to a part-time programme, you cannot move back to the full-time programme.

Work Attachment

Will there be any work attachment that needs to be fulfilled as part of the full-time programme?

Yes, Work attachment is compulsory for all full-time students. You must complete a minimum of 24 weeks of work attachment as part of the graduation requirements.

When do I start my Work Attachment?

You may start work attachment after Year 2 and are encouraged to complete it in Year 3 of the 4 years of study.

What is the purpose of the Work Attachment?

It provides students with an opportunity to put theory into practice, to bring work experience into the classroom, and to expose them to their industry's work environment. In addition, students can initiate the Applied Project - a compulsory and graded academic requirement - during their Work Attachment.

What is Applied Project?

This compulsory component requires students to identify a work-related problem, formulate an applied project, execute a research plan and propose solutions to the problem. This project will be supervised by a SUSS faculty member and a member of the organisation where the project is conducted.

How will a Work Attachment be different from an internship?

Unlike a traditional internship, SUSS's Work Attachment is longer and structured, requiring students to undertake work assignments and job tasks like employees at their host organisations. Students must complete an attachment that is directly relevant to their enrolled degree programme and field of study. SUSS and employers will co-develop and closely supervise a structured, 24-week work attachment with clearly defined learning outcomes. This will allow students to gain real work experience that complements their classroom learning.

Can I opt for a longer Work Attachment?

Yes, you can opt for a longer work attachment.

If I have previous full-time employment, do I still need to fulfil the work attachment?

Yes, you will still need to complete the 24 weeks of work attachment.

May I source for my own Work Attachment?

Yes, but you will need to submit the necessary proposal and documents to the Office of Career Development for approval before embarking on your work attachment officially.

Am I automatically assigned to a company?

No. You are encouraged to source for a company on your own. Though we have partner companies, you would still have to compete openly for these positions with your peers.

Service-Learning

Service-Learning at SUSS

Is Service-Learning compulsory?

Yes, Service-Learning is a graduating requirement of SUSS full-time degree programmes.

What is Service-Learning?

At SUSS, Service-Learning is conceived as an integral part of the University's learning ecology and a pedagogy to empower students to further develop and act on your sense of social responsibility, grounded in real-world ideas and practices to contribute meaningfully to society.

An educational experience that integrates the ability to address community needs with intentional learning activities, Service-Learning enables students and community agencies to work together towards outcomes that are mutually beneficial. Service-Learning creates a connection between the university and the community that facilitates unique cross-sector collaboration; a sharing of resources that helps to enhance society's well-being. Through Service-Learning, you invite community partners to become your co-educators to guide you in your journey of growth as responsible members of society.

What do I do in Service-Learning?

During the course of your full-time degree programme at SUSS, students will research, discuss and propose a Service-Learning collaboration in consultation with local community partners(s) of your choice. You are encouraged to tap on your existing strengths, skill-sets and/or Professional Major in service with the community. You will work on a sustainable endeavour that meets the needs identified by your community partner over a period of two years or more. In return, the community partner mentor collaborates with the SUSS Service-Learning coordinator to mentor you in their field knowledge and your personal development.

Past volunteering experience

If I had worked in or currently perform volunteer work with a social service organisation, do I still need to fulfil the Service-Learning graduation requirement?

Yes, to fulfil your Service-Learning graduation requirements, you will collaborate with a community agency on a sustainable endeavour that meets the needs identified by your community partner over a period of two years or more during the course of your full-time degree programme. While SUSS values students’ prior community engagement, volunteer work undertaken prior to students’ completion of SUSS’s Foundations of Service-Learning workshop cannot be considered towards fulfilment of Service-Learning graduation requirements.

If I had worked in or currently perform volunteer work with a social service organisation, can I continue that project to fulfil the Service-Learning project requirement?

Yes, if you have previously volunteered or are currently volunteering with a community agency, you may consider proposing a Service-Learning collaboration with the same agency in fulfilment of your Service-Learning graduation requirements. As with all other Service-Learning proposals, acceptance of your proposed Service-Learning collaboration is dependent on approval from both your proposed community partner and the SUSS Office of Service-Learning.

Type of Service-Learning projects in SUSS

What types of Service-Learning are there?

At SUSS, we value Student Voice as a key element of Service-Learning. Therefore, SUSS emphasises student autonomy, empowering students to propose self-directed, student-driven Service-Learning initiatives. Students may propose a diverse range of Service-Learning project types, be it individual or group projects, direct or indirect service, project-based or on-going projects. No one Service-Learning project type is considered better than the other – the important thing is to prioritise the needs of the community in determining an appropriate Service-Learning project type, and to balance the needs of the community with a commitment level that is also realistic, achievable and sustainable for you.

The following are suggested social sectors for which you may consider proposing a Service-Learning initiative:

  • Aging
  • Animal Welfare
  • Arts/Culture/Heritage
  • Biodiversity/Conservation/Environment/Food Security/Nature/Sustainability
  • Community-building
  • Diversity & Inclusion (e.g. human rights, special needs, disabilities, women’s rights, migrant workers, new communities, interfaith understanding, etc.)
  • Families (e.g. single-parent families, families in transition, etc.)
  • Health/Well-being (e.g. mental health, drugs & substance abuse, etc)
  • Poverty (e.g. silent workers, etc.)
  • Vulnerable Children/Youth

Funding

Where will the funding for the Service-Learning come from?

The Office of Service-Learning has curated a range of student and project grants from government agencies, corporations and foundations to minimise any financial barriers students might face while serving the community. Students who require funding to carry out your Service-Learning initiatives may apply for funding. Service-Learning Project Requirements

Is there a minimum number of hours that we have to fulfill?

At SUSS, we value Community Voice as a key element of Service-Learning. Therefore, there is no minimum number of hours that students have to fulfil. The rationale for this is to empower you to negotiate a Service-Learning commitment with your community partner that prioritises the needs of the community over institution-mandated requirements for Service-Learning. When co-designing the commitment level of your Service-Learning initiative in collaboration with your community partner, you will need to realistically balance the needs of the community with a Service-Learning engagement frequency that is also achievable and sustainable for you.

For documentation purposes, student leaders are required to record the number of hours served by their team members. These service hours are to be verified by your community partner mentor. However, the number of service hours are not taken into consideration in the assessment criteria for Service-Learning graduation requirements.

How long is the Service-Learning commitment?

To fulfil the Service-Learning graduating requirement of the SUSS full-time degree programme, students are expected to sustain their Service-Learning commitment over a period of two years or more (inclusive of pre-service training) during the course of their full-time degree programme.

While the recommended minimum expected frequency of engagement for each cohort is once a month, the exact frequency of engagement should be an agreement between you and your proposed community partner organisation on what works best for both your proposed community partner organisation, and is realistic for your schedules. For example, you may readjust your group’s involvement in exam months, provided your community partner organisation is agreeable.

Beyond graduation requirements, however, students often continue to sustain their commitment to the community beyond the two year duration. Your Service-Learning commitment is expected to last you a lifetime as you prepare yourselves for active and fulfilling lives through a lifelong commitment to contributing meaningfully to society.

Questions before the projects start

What is the minimum/maximum number of people for each group/initiative?

The minimum number of people for each initiative is one. There is no maximum number. That said, the number of service-learners should be negotiated in consultation with your community partner. For example, if the task the community agency would like you to work on will require more than one service-learner, then you should recruit an appropriate number of participants with the necessary skills. Likewise, if the task requires no more than a certain number of service-learners, we should not burden the community partner organisation to receive more service-learners than they are willing and able to.

Must we stick to our Foundations of Service-Learning workshop group for our S-L projects?

No, the choice is yours. You may choose to work with like-minded peers, or collaborate with others beyond SUSS.

Can a Service-Learning project be done alone or must it be done in a team? Is collaboration with non-SUSS parties allowed?

Yes, the choice is yours. You may choose to embark on Service-Learning either as:

  • an individual;
  • a team comprising only SUSS members; or
  • a team comprising non-SUSS members.

The choice to engage the community as an individual or as a team (and if as a team, who the members should comprise) should best reflect the needs of the community you are choosing to engage with. In other words, choose to collaborate as a team, if a team is necessary to carry out the service required by the community, and choose to collaborate with members who will best bring the skillsets and attitudes that are beneficial to the community you are working with.

If you intend to carry out your Service-Learning as an individual, please submit the SUSS S-L Initiative Proposal form by omitting the section titled “If this is a group project, please provide proposed members’ details”.

I have been volunteering for a period of time already and I would like to include it as my Service-Learning proposal. However, it is not an initiative by me but I would like to continue. Do I need to fill up the initiative form?

Yes, this is aligned with the principle of sustainability that we encourage. Please fill in the SUSS S-L Initiative Proposal form as it is, so that you may consider how you would like to deepen your involvement on the social issue you are engaging with for Service-Learning, and so that we may liaise with your community partner mentor.

Is there a deadline to join a Service-Learning group/initiative?

In general, students are encouraged to submit their completed SUSS S-L Initiative Proposal forms in Semester 1 of their first year of study. The exact deadline for the submission of your completed SUSS S-L Initiative Proposal form will be communicated to each cohort by the SUSS Office of Service-Learning. If you have a valid reason, you may submit a request for an extension, subject to prior approval from the SUSS Office of Service-Learning.

What happens if I cannot find a group/initiative to join, or a group/initiative that I am interested in?

We would encourage you to dig deep and think about social issues or causes that matter personally to you. If you have not found any peers who are initiating something you are personally interested in, why not consider initiating one yourself? You may wish to refer to ConcernSG for some ideas.

Can I join a group/initiative that has already made progress? For example, some groups have already started their Service-Learning Initiatives during the second semester of their first year of study, would one still be allowed to join them?

Yes, this is subject to the agreement of the Service-Learning group and their community partner. For official acknowledgement of the addition of a new member, the group leader should submit an updated SUSS S-L Initiative Proposal form, including the name(s) of the new member(s). The SUSS Office of Service-Learning will follow-up with the community partner mentor for their official acknowledgement of the participation of the new member(s).

Is there a list of existing Service-Learning groups/initiatives for us to choose from?

Yes, please approach the office for a list of initiatives curated by SUSS students.

What should I look out for if I have decided to partner with a new community partner?

Before embarking on a Service-Learning initiative with a new community partner, here are some questions you may wish to consider:

  • Alignment
    • Does my proposed new initiative match the needs identified by the community? Is it meaningful to the community?
    • Does the proposed service engagement align with the key elements of Service-Learning? Is the service meaningful to the participants? Is learning inherent in the service?
    • Does the service leverage on the skills and knowledge of the team? Does my team have the requisite skills? If not, can training be arranged, or am I able to recruit others with the necessary skills?
  • Support & Relationships
    • Does the community agency have the capacity to work with my group? Will our presence be a burden or help to the staff?
    • Is the project manageable? Are there any safety or national standards to adhere to in the execution of this project?
    • Do I have access to the resources (physical, social, administrative, time, funds, etc.) required for this initiative?
  • Sustainability
    • Can our proposed collaboration be sustained over two years or more?
    • Does the service empower the community to continue the work to serve themselves and others?

Will our timesheet be provided by school? Or do we have to draw up an individual timesheet for each of us?

Yes, a timesheet template will be provided by the SUSS Office of Service-Learning once proposals have been received and approved.

Questions during the projects

What should I do if I want to change my Service-Learning group?

Students should inform your student leader and communicate with your community partner mentor to request for permission to withdraw from the group. If the community partner mentor chooses to write an acknowledgement of your past commitments to the agency, you may approach another community partner to negotiate another Service-Learning engagement for the remaining duration of your Service-Learning requirements. You may then submit your commitment period to both initiatives in fulfilment of the full duration of your Service-Learning graduation requirement.

However, if your first community partner mentor chooses not to acknowledge your prior engagement with their community agency due to non-completion of the original agreement, you will need to commit afresh to a two-year Service-Learning engagement (inclusive of pre-service training) with the new community agency.

Affected student(s) and student leaders should update the SUSS Office of Service-Learning of any such changes.

Who should I approach if I need to book a Seminar room for my Service-Learning activities?

For any room reservation, students should email osl@suss.edu.sg at least 4 working days in advance. Please provide the following details:

  • Name of event
  • Nature of event (only S-L related activities will be approved)
  • Date & time of event
  • No. of attendees (any public guests?)
  • Arrangement of room (please provide a floor plan if you have specific room arrangement)
  • Any logistics required

Overseas Experience

Is the overseas experience compulsory?

Yes, the overseas experience is compulsory and is part of graduation requirements. It may take in form of the following:

  • Overseas Study Mission;
  • Service-Learning project;
  • Summer School; or
  • Work Attachment

Why is Overseas Experience important?

It aims to provide students with experience of either studying or working abroad. As the global economy is ever changing, there is a need to develop relevant capabilities and competencies to respond swiftly to the challenges formed in the environment. With these experience, students are able to look beyond our national borders.

Can I apply for waiver of overseas experience if I have several overseas experience from previous schools' trips?

No.

Will SUSS help to arrange work attachments, service-learning projects and overseas experience for the students?

We have an Office of Service-Learning & Student Life and Office of Career Development to assist our full-time students with these arrangements.

Is summer programme done overseas considered as part of the overseas experience?

Yes. We have a list of partner universities for students to choose from.

Am I able to transfer credits from the summer programme?

Yes. However, it would be subject to approval.

Will I receive a transcript upon completion of the programme?

Yes, you will receive a transcript from the host university upon completion.

Can I use my PSEA to pay for the overseas experience?

Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) Team Building

Is OBS Team Building programme compulsory?

Yes. You are required to participate in various team building exercises, over a 3-day 2-night programme at Pulau Ubin, Outward Bound Singapore (OBS). These activities will help you and the rest of the student body build cohesion while promoting the development of leadership, teamwork, resilience and other soft skills. Such competencies will help you meet the demands of your undergraduate studies, future careers and wider role in society.

Can I apply for waiver of OBS if I have medical conditions?

All students are required to complete a medical check-up and the forms will be submitted to the OBS Medical Panel to assess.

Activities are designed for all levels of physical fitness and are not meant only for the physically fit. The OBS Medical Panel and Course Director will determine the level of participation for each student.

Student Life

What activities are there under Student Life?

In SUSS, we believe that education involves the holistic development of the individual and recognise that a student's achievement is not restricted to academic performance. The Student Life Programmes aim to empower students to further develop and act on their pre-existing sense of social responsibility, develop leadership qualities, and equip them with skills and knowledge for the future workforce.

Our programme focuses on Enterprise, Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Adventure and Mentorship. In addition to SUSS programmes, students are encouraged to participate in national and international programmes and competitions, selected by SUSS to gain exposure and work across universities.

Is participation in Student Life activities compulsory?

While some events are mandatory, most of our programmes are not. We believe in self-directed learning and students stepping forward to indicate their interests and participate in our programmes. Students can initiate interest groups and projects that are consistent with SUSS's educational philosophy of ‘Head, Heart and Habit', three essential dispositions that enable students to reach their goals while making a positive impact in society.

Will there be funding to enable us to participate in competitions and programmes?

It will be on a case-by-case basis. Most competitions and programmes selected and endorsed by the office will be funded or subsidised.

Will the full-time programmes have student interest groups?

Students are encouraged to initiate interest groups and projects.

How do I find out about existing student interest groups?

Year 1 students can attend the Annual Programmes Information Session hosted by Office of Service-Learning & Student Life to find out more.

Will I be funded to start my own student interest groups?

It depends. If your interest group or projects fulfil SUSS's mission, your group may receive seed funding from the university or sponsors (e.g. the National Youth Council (NYC)), who supports their cause.

Student Services

Will the full-time programmes have a counselling service?

SUSS has a Counselling & Care Corner (C3) located on campus. Students are encouraged to visit C3 if they need counselling or professional help. All information shared and personal details will be kept confidential.

Will I be able to apply for Undergraduate Concession Card?

Yes, you are eligible for Undergraduate Concession Card as you are a full-time matriculated undergraduate from a government-aided tertiary institution.

In SUSS, the Undergraduate Concession Card will also act as your Student Card. You will need to produce this card during examinations for verification purpose. Click here to read more details on the concession scheme.

Admission Requirements and Application

I am interested to apply for a place in the full-time programmes. When do admission applications open?

Admission applications for the full-time programmes close on 19 March 2017 (Sun). You may apply online and will have to pay an application fee of S$15 (net of GST).

How do I pay the application fee?

Application fee of S$15 (net of GST) is payable via the following options:

Singaporeans or Permanent Residents must also satisfy the following minimum Mother Tongue Language (MTL) proficiency requirement set by the Ministry of Education:
  • D7 for the Higher MTL paper taken at the 'O' level examination, or
  • 'S' grade for the H1 MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese, or
  • 'S' grade for the H2 MTL paper taken at the 'A' level examination, or
  • Pass in the MTL 'B' syllabus paper at the 'A' level examination.

If you have been exempted from MTL, the MOE-approved subject-in-lieu will be considered as your MTL subject.

Meeting the above minimum admission requirements does not guarantee a place in the university as admission to the full-time programmes is based on open competition for available places for each programme.

Other non-academic considerations are:
  • Personal attributes (communication skills, leadership qualities, special talents, work experience and others), and
  • Service to others (social or community service, volunteer work and others).

Applicants are first shortlisted based on their academic qualifications. Shortlisted candidates are then assessed on their non-academic qualities or achievements via a written essay in response to a video, a cognitive test and their performance at individual and group interviews.

What do the interviewers look for at the interviews?

In general, the interviews look for the following qualities:
  • Commitment,
  • Consciousness (of society),
  • Cognitive skills,
  • Creativity, and
  • Communication skills.

What are the scoring criteria for the written essay?

The written essay should reveal the author's ability for thoughtful reflection and sound reasoning skills.

I have both a Polytechnic Diploma and Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level results. Which should I apply under?

You are free to submit an online application using either of your results. The best result will be used for admission consideration.

What is the expected intake per year?

We started with 200 students in our inaugural intake in 2014. We plan to expand to 800 students per year, in about five years.

Are the admission requirements different from those of the part-time programmes?

Unlike the part-time programmes, students in the full-time programmes need not be 21 years or older. They also do not need to have two or more years of work experience.

How many programmes can I apply for during the application process?

You can indicate up to four (4) choices in the online application form.

Will SUSS's full-time programmes be on the (Joint University) Common Acceptance Platform?

Yes, they will be on the Common Acceptance Platform.

# Applicants who receive offers in the 1st window must indicate their acceptance during this window. They will not be able to accept these offers in the 2nd window. Failure to do so will mean that the offer lapses and the place will be offered to the next person on the waiting list during the 2nd window.

Will there be an orientation or matriculation day for newly registered students?

Yes, all new students will be required to attend both a Student Induction session at Singapore University of Social Sciences and a Team Building session at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) before commencement of the academic year. There is also a preparation programme that all new students have to go through.

How much are the fees for the full-time programmes?

The fee paid each semester is dependent on the number of courses taken. A student is likely to take an average of five to six 5-cu courses per semester.

Why do the Minor courses and Common Curriculum electives have lower fees?

The full-time Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Social Work and Supply Chain Management programmes have Minor courses that are drawn from the part-time programmes. Similarly, the Common Curriculum electives in all the full-time programmes are also drawn from the part-time programmes. As such, the fees for these courses follow the existing fees and structure of the part-time programmes.

What do the tuition fees cover?

The tuition fees cover study materials (i.e. textbooks), classes, assignments and examinations. They do not include miscellaneous fees for other items specified by SUSS from time to time.

In the course of my studies, would I be affected by any increase in tuition fees?

Yes, all existing students will pay the revised tuition fees if there should be any increase. National Servicemen will pay the relevant tuition fees (along with any increase in tuition fees) based on the year in which they were offered a place in the University.

Do we have to pay GST?

For students paying the subsidised fees, GST for full-time programmes will be absorbed by MOE. These students pay only the tuition fees listed.

How do I make payment for the Programme Fees (Tuition Fees and Miscellaneous Fees)?

  1. Direct Payment (any of the following modes: Cash, Cheque, NETS, Cash Card, or Visa/MasterCard) to be made at the Finance Office located at 461 Clementi Road, SIM Headquarters, Blk A Level 2.

    For Nets payment, the daily limit is S$2,000 or S$3,000, depending on the bank and your personal limit.

    For credit card payment, the limit is subject to your available balance at the point of payment. We accept Visa and MasterCard only.

What is the Tuition Grant Scheme? I understand that I can use that to pay for my tuition fees?

Eligible students enrolled in SUSS's full-time programmes will receive the Tuition Grant from the Singapore Government. The Tuition Grant Scheme was introduced by the Government to subsidise the cost of tertiary education in Singapore. The scheme is currently open to students enrolled in full-time undergraduate and diploma programmes (subject to guidelines under the existing policy).

All non-Singaporean students (including Singapore Permanent Residents) under this scheme are required to work in Singapore for a minimum period of three (3) years upon graduation.

Opting out from the Tuition Grant scheme would result in paying 100% of the unsubsidised tuition fees.
